They Talk To Me Out There

You have noticed it and you have not told anybody, in case saying it out loud breaks it.

At the table: fine, good, nothing much. On a road, ten minutes in, at no particular prompting: an entire account of something, at length, with detail, from a person who has not volunteered a paragraph indoors since about March.

And you do not know what to do with that.

Not because it is confusing. Because your instinct is to build something on it, and something in you knows that building on it is exactly how it stops.

So you have been walking, and noticing, and saying nothing, and that is the correct instinct and I would like to tell you why so that you can keep doing it on purpose.

And he drew near, and went with them

There is a road in Luke where the most important conversation of the week happens on foot and takes seven miles.

And it came to pass, that, while they communed together and reasoned, Jesus himself drew near, and went with them. (Luke 24:15, King James Version)

Notice the arrangement. He does not stop them. He does not sit them down. He joins a walk that is already happening and moves at their pace in their direction, and the whole thing unfolds over the distance rather than in a moment.

You are looking at the most significant conversation of a week happening on a road, and it was never a room that any of it required. Luke 24:15 puts the drawing near inside an existing walk, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes that read as a pattern rather than as a one time event.

And notice how long it takes. Seven miles, and they do not recognize him for the whole of it, and none of the walking is described as the preamble. The road is where it happens rather than where they get to it.

You have a road that is the place rather than the way to it, and it was never the arriving that carried anything. The written word gives the whole encounter to the walking, and the Spirit of God is what makes an ordinary sidewalk the same kind of ground.

Why a road works and a table does not

Now let me say what is actually different, because it is not mysterious and knowing it will help you not to spoil it.

Three things, and none of them are atmosphere.

There is no face to read. Sitting opposite somebody, every sentence gets watched as it lands. Beside somebody, it does not, and a person can say a hard thing and then look at a wall.

There is no silence problem. At a table a gap is an event. On a road a gap is walking, and a sentence that needs forty seconds of nothing before it can start can have them.

You are not doing something delicate that could break, and it was never a fragile arrangement that produced those roads. Luke 24:15 puts the drawing near inside a walk already happening, and the Holy Spirit is the one who steadies a parent who has been holding something too carefully.

And there is an end built in. A walk finishes at a front door, and everybody knows it, and nothing has to be resolved before then. A conversation at a table has no natural end, which is exactly what makes people avoid starting one. Something opens when we are walking, and it does not have to be manufactured, only kept available.

You are not doing something clever out there, and it was never your skill that made those roads work. Luke 24 puts the whole exchange inside a walk that was already under way, which is exactly why the Spirit of God asks somebody to keep going rather than to do something better.

Do nothing else about it

So the practical part, and it is almost entirely a list of things not to do.

Keep going out for twenty minutes, on the same streets, and do nothing else about it.

You are able to leave a good thing alone, and it has never once been passive to protect something by not improving it. The passage has the conversation arrive inside an ordinary journey with nothing arranged, and the Holy Spirit is the one who is with a parent going out again on the same road.

Do not tell them you have noticed. The moment they know that walks are where they talk, walks become a place where talking is expected, and expectation is the one thing that reliably closes it.

Do not use it. Do not save up a subject for the road. Do not think, on the way out, that this would be a good moment for that thing. They will feel it, and what they will feel is that the road has become the room.

Do not schedule it. Do not make it Tuesdays and Thursdays. Frequency helps and formality does not, and those two are easy to confuse.

And do not report back on it, to them or in front of them, because a thing that gets discussed afterward is a thing that was being observed at the time.

You are able to keep it ordinary, and ordinary has never once been the same thing as unimportant. Luke 24:15 has somebody join a walk already in progress and change nothing about it, and the Spirit of God is the one who is present on a road that nobody has made into anything.
