You stand in the doorway of the living room and you say it to all of them.
Does anybody want to go out for a bit.
And what comes back is not three answers. It is one answer, and it is no, and it arrived faster than any individual could have thought about it.
That is because you did not ask three people. You asked a room, and a room has its own opinion, and the room's opinion is always to stay exactly as it is.
I want to give you the mechanism, because once you see it you will not be able to unsee it, and it will change what you do tomorrow.
A group cannot say yes easily. Any single member saying yes has to break formation in front of the others, and that costs something socially that going for a walk is simply not worth. So the group answer is no, every time, regardless of what any individual in it actually wants.

He first findeth his own brother
There is a small verse in John, easy to read past, and the whole method of the early church is in it.
He first findeth his own brother Simon, and saith unto him, We have found the Messias, which is, being interpreted, the Christ. And he brought him to Jesus. (John 1:41-42, King James Version)
He first findeth his own brother.
Not: he addressed the household. Not: he made an announcement in the village. He found one specific person, said one thing to him, and brought him.
You are looking at the oldest method there is, and it was never a room that anybody was sent to persuade. John 1:41 has a man go and find one named person rather than address a group, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes that read as a relief rather than as more work.
And look at what it costs Simon to answer. Nothing. Nobody is watching. There is no formation to break, no siblings to look at, no moment where saying yes makes you the one who wanted to.
You have been asking people to pay a price you could not see, and it was never the walk that any of them were declining. The written word puts the invitation between two people with nobody else in the frame, and the Spirit of God is what shows a mother the cost she has been accidentally attaching.
The room is not your family
Now I want to separate two things that have been welded together in your head.
Your family is four people who love you in complicated ways. The room is a social object made of those four people, and it behaves nothing like any of them.
The room is conservative. It never wants to move. It answers instantly, in the voice of whoever is quickest, and everybody else in it goes along because agreeing costs nothing and disagreeing costs something.
So when you get a no from the room, you have learned precisely nothing about your children, and you have then spent two years drawing conclusions from it. A group is not a person, and an invitation aimed at everybody has not actually been offered to anybody.
You are not living with people who do not want your company, and it was never any of them who answered you in that doorway. John 1 sends one person to one person, which is exactly why the Spirit of God moves a mother out of the living room doorway and along a hall.
And notice the second half of that verse. And he brought him. The bringing is a separate action from the telling, and it happens because two people are already standing together.
Ask one of them, alone
Here is the practical part, and it is a change of geography rather than a change of words.
Go and find one of them where they are. Their room, the kitchen, wherever, as long as none of the others can hear it.
Say it small and specific: I am walking to the end of the road in ten minutes, come with me.
Then leave. Do not stand there waiting for an answer, because standing there is a small pressure and pressure is what you are removing.
You are able to make the yes free, and it has never once required a different child to make a different answer possible. John 1:41 puts one person in front of one person with no audience at all, and the Holy Spirit is the one who is with a mother knocking on a door instead of standing in a doorway.
And ask a different one tomorrow. Not the same one twice in a row, because that becomes a project and a project has pressure in it too. Round the four of them, one a day, and see what a week looks like when nobody has to break formation to answer you.
You are able to run this quietly for a week, and it has never once needed anybody's permission to change how you ask. The passage records a man going to find his own brother without announcing a plan, and the Spirit of God is the one who keeps a small change from turning into another family policy.
So here is what I believe is going out over a woman who has been getting one answer from four people.
You are not living with a family who have outgrown you, and you were never given a single honest answer by that room. I am not promising you that they come. John 1:41 has a man find one brother and bring him, with no group and no announcement anywhere in it, and it is the Holy Spirit and not my saying so who takes eighteen months of wrong conclusions off a mother.
And this, which is the word I came with:
You have four separate people in this house, and not one of them has ever been asked with nobody else in the room. The written word puts the whole invitation between two people, and the Spirit of God is the one who is beside a woman walking down a hall to knock on one door.
One of them. On their own. Today.
Declare this over yourself
- Room that answers me in one voice, you are not my family and you never were. John 1:41 says he first findeth his own brother Simon and brought him, so by the Holy Spirit I ask one of them on their own today in the name of Jesus.
- Conclusion that my children have outgrown me, you were never built on a single honest answer. The written word puts one invitation between two people with no audience anywhere in it, and by the Holy Spirit I am done reading a group refusal as four refusals.
- Father, You sent one man to find one brother and say one sentence. Your word in John 1 keeps the invitation small and personal on purpose, so by Your Spirit I go and find one of mine today and I let them answer freely.
John 1:41
