I Ask In A Voice That Expects No

Listen to yourself ask.

Not the words. The words are fine. The words have been fine for two years. Listen to the shape of it.

I suppose nobody wants to go out. Nobody fancies a walk, do they. We could go out, but I imagine everyone is busy.

Every one of those already contains the answer. The refusal is packed inside the question before it leaves the room, and what comes back is not really a decision, it is an echo.

And then the echo gets recorded as more evidence, and the evidence makes the next question worse, and around it goes.

I want to be careful here, because this can be heard as a criticism, and it is not one. A voice like that is not laziness or self pity. It is what happens to a person who has been turned down enough times to start bracing.

We were in our own sight as grasshoppers

There is a line in Numbers, in the report the scouts bring back, and it is one of the most honest sentences in the Old Testament.

And there we saw the giants, the sons of Anak, which come of the giants: and we were in our own sight as grasshoppers, and so we were in their sight. (Numbers 13:33, King James Version)

In our own sight as grasshoppers. And so we were in their sight.

Read the order of that, because the order is the whole thing. It does not say the giants looked at them and thought they were small. It says they saw themselves that way first, and then that is what came back at them.

You are not receiving a verdict from your family, and you were never being shown anything except what you sent out. Numbers 13:33 puts the self assessment before the reflection rather than after it, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes that read as an opening rather than an accusation.

And notice how the report is dealt with. It is not disputed as a description of the land. The grapes were real, the walled cities were real. What is wrong is not the facts. What is wrong is the sentence they added to the facts about themselves.

You have facts that are perfectly accurate and a sentence about yourself that is not, and it was never the facts that were doing the damage. The written word separates a true report from a false self reading in one verse, and the Spirit of God is the one who lets a woman keep the first and put down the second.

The tone is a message and it arrives first

Here is what is happening in the half second before your children answer.

Tone lands before content. Everybody knows this and nobody applies it to themselves.

You are surrounded by people who have been answering the tone and not the words, and it was never their unwillingness doing the work in that half second. Numbers 13:33 puts the grasshopper sentence in the men's own mouths before anybody else says a thing, and the Spirit of God is the one who is with a mother hearing what she has been sending out.

When the asking carries an apology in front of it and an escape route behind it, what a child hears is: this is not really being offered, and the correct response is to help her out of it. So they groan, or they say nothing, and they think they are doing what was asked.

That is not defiance. That is a household being obedient to a signal they were never meant to receive.

You are not surrounded by people who refuse you, and it was never a real question that any of them got the chance to answer. Numbers 13 shows a report shaping what comes back before anybody else has spoken, and the Holy Spirit is the one who separates a tone from a person so a mother can change one without condemning herself.

The tone is allowed to be repaired, and asking again in a different voice is not pretending the last two years did not happen.

Ask flat

So the practical part, and it is very small and quite hard. Ask flat. No apology in front. Nothing on the end.

We are going out for twenty minutes. Anyone who wants to come, come.

That is it. Do not add if you want. Do not add I know nobody will. Do not add it is fine if not, because it is fine if not, and saying so is the escape route that tells everybody this was never real.

You are able to hand over a question that has not been answered for anybody in advance, and it has never once been pushy to ask plainly. The passage traces the outcome back to the report rather than to the giants, which is exactly why the Spirit of God works on the sentence a woman is carrying rather than on her children.

And it will feel abrupt. It will feel almost rude, for about four days, because you have been softening for so long that plain sounds sharp. It is not sharp. It is just level.
