Ten Minutes Nobody Takes From Me

Count the interruptions between eight this morning and now.

Not the big ones. The ordinary ones: a question mid sentence, a name called from another room, somebody arriving at the point where you were about to finish a thought. In a house with three children and one adult, that number is not far off two hundred.

And what that does, over years, is make continuity itself rare. Not time. Continuity. Ten minutes where nothing cuts across the middle of anything.

And you noticed something about four months ago and have not said it to anybody, because it sounds like an odd thing to say.

The only place you get it is on the street with one of them.

Not because the street is special. Because there is one child instead of three, because the kitchen is not visible, because nobody can arrive in a doorway with a question, and because a road has no rooms in it for anybody to be in.

So a sentence starts, and it goes all the way to the end of itself, and then another one does. And you came in from one of those about four months ago and stood in the hall and thought: that was the first time today.

Isaac went out to meditate in the field

There is a small verse in Genesis that nobody preaches and that describes a habit.

And Isaac went out to meditate in the field at the eventide: and he lifted up his eyes, and saw, and, behold, the camels were coming. (Genesis 24:63, King James Version)

Read the shape of it. Out. Field. Evening. It is written as though it were an ordinary thing he did, and the sentence spends no time justifying it, which is usually how the Bible signals a habit rather than an event.

You are looking at a habit written down without a defense attached, and it was never something that had to be argued for. Genesis 24:63 records the going out plainly as a thing he did, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes that read as permission rather than as an example to live up to.

And notice what happens in it. He lifts up his eyes and sees something coming. The uninterrupted stretch is the thing that made him available to notice, and the rest of that chapter turns on him having been out there.

You have a stretch of time that makes noticing possible, and it was never wasted for having produced nothing on most evenings. The written word puts an ordinary habit immediately before something arriving, and the Spirit of God is what makes an unremarkable ten minutes worth keeping.

Two things at once

Now let me name the discovery, because I think it has been slightly embarrassing to hold.

It is a thing that serves the mother and serves the child at the same time, and there has been some doubt about whether that is allowed.

Because a walk with one of your children is meant to be for them. And it is for them. And it is also the only ten minutes in a day where a sentence gets to finish, and there has been a quiet reluctance to admit the second part in case it makes the first part less pure.

It does not. Ten uninterrupted minutes is not a small thing in a house like yours, and taking it on a sidewalk is not stealing it from anybody.

You are allowed to be fed by the same ten minutes that feeds them, and it was never a compromise for a thing to work in both directions. Genesis 24 records a man going out for his own reasons and finding something arriving, which is exactly why the Spirit of God is untroubled by a mother getting something out of a walk with her own child.

And there is something worth saying about what it does for the child, which you may not have considered. A child gets very little uninterrupted adult in a house with three of them. Ten minutes of a mother whose sentences finish is a different substance from an hour of a mother being cut across, and they know the difference even if they could not name it.

One of them, ten minutes, nothing else

So the practical part, and it is about protecting the continuity rather than the time.

Take one of them out for ten minutes and let it be the only thing happening.

You are able to hold ten minutes without anything cutting across it, and it has never once required a bigger stretch to have been enough. The passage records a plain habit of going out at evening, and the Holy Spirit is the one who is with a woman and one child on a street with nothing else running.

One child. Not all of them, because all of them reproduces the house on a sidewalk and the interruptions come with it.

Phone in a pocket and not in a hand. Not because phones are wicked, but because the whole thing being protected here is continuity, and a phone is an interruption with a battery.

And do not use the ten minutes to sort anything out. No admin. No reminders. The moment it carries a task it stops being the thing that has become rare.

You are protecting something rare when you leave the task at home, and it has never once been indulgent to keep ten minutes clean. Genesis 24:63 gives no purpose for the going out at all, and the Spirit of God is the one who is out at evening with a woman whose sentences are finishing.
