What Gets Said Outside1 Samuel 20:11

We Never Say It At The Table

This message is for the father whose household cannot hold a hard conversation facing each other, and who has never worked out that shoulder to shoulder is a different room

You have tried the table. More than once.

You sat him down, you were calm, you had thought about how to start, and about four sentences in something closed and the rest of it was two people being polite at each other.

And you concluded from that, reasonably, that he does not want to talk to you.

I do not think that is what happened. I think the room was wrong, and I think almost nobody is ever told that rooms have properties, and that facing somebody across a table is one of the most demanding arrangements two people can be in.

Because at a table there is a face. And a face has to be read while you are talking, and reacted to, and managed. And a fifteen year old saying a hard thing while watching his father's face receive it is doing two enormous jobs at once, and he will stop, and the stopping will look like unwillingness.

We Never Say It At The Table

Come, and let us go out into the field

There is a moment in Samuel where two people need to say something dangerous and one of them names a location before anything else.

And Jonathan said unto David, Come, and let us go out into the field. And they went out both of them into the field. (1 Samuel 20:11, King James Version)

Come, and let us go out into the field.

Read what he does. Before a word of the actual matter, before any of the difficult part, he moves the conversation. He does not say let us find a quiet room. He says out, and into the open, and both of them go.

You are being shown somebody choosing the room before choosing the words, and it was never the sentences that got decided first. 1 Samuel 20:11 puts the moving before the speaking, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes that read as wisdom rather than as avoidance.

And what gets said out in that field is about as hard as a conversation gets. It concerns a father, a threat to a life, and a friendship that cannot survive one of the outcomes. That entire thing gets handled outside, walking, and it holds.

You have a picture of the hardest possible conversation happening on foot, and it was never a table that any of that required. The written word puts the whole difficult exchange out of doors, and the Spirit of God is what shows a man that a room is a choice rather than a given.

What shoulder to shoulder removes

Now let me be specific about what changes, because it is not atmosphere.

Facing somebody, there is a face to read. Beside somebody, there is not.

That single difference removes about half the work of saying a hard thing. He can say a sentence and not immediately find out what it did. He can leave a gap. He can look at the road instead of at your reaction, and the road does not respond to anything, which is exactly what makes it useful.

And silence works differently. At a table a silence is an event and everybody in it is aware of it. Walking, a silence is just walking. Facing somebody is not the only way to be with them, and a hard thing said sideways is not a smaller kind of honesty.

You are not being refused at that table, and it was never unwillingness that closed things down four sentences in. 1 Samuel 20 moves two people outdoors before the dangerous part, which is exactly why the Spirit of God takes a father out of a dining room and onto a street.

And there is a thing about pace worth knowing. Walking gives both of you something to do with your bodies, which means neither of you has to sit still while something difficult is in the air, and sitting still is most of what makes a table unbearable.

Take him out and walk

So the practical part, and the whole of it is the arrangement.

Take the one you need to talk to out for twenty minutes and walk shoulder to shoulder.

You are able to change the room before you change anything else, and it has never once been avoidance to pick the ground. The passage names the field before it names the subject, and the Holy Spirit is the one who is with a man saying come out for twenty minutes rather than sit down a minute.

Do not announce the subject before you go. Do not say we need to talk, because that turns the walk into a table with legs.

And do not raise it in the first ten minutes. It will feel like wasting the walk. It is not: the first ten minutes are what makes the eleventh possible, and anything said before minute ten is being said to somebody who is still braced.

And if it does not come up at all, come home. It has not failed. Do it again in a few days, the same way, and let it come up when it comes up or not at all.

You are able to take him out with no requirement attached, and it has never once been a wasted twenty minutes to have walked beside somebody. 1 Samuel 20:11 gets both of them into the field before one word of the matter, and the Spirit of God is the one who is out on a road with a father and a son not talking about anything yet.

The breakthrough

So here is what I believe is going out over a man who has tried three times at a table.

You are not a father his son cannot talk to, and you were never being refused anything in that dining room. I am not promising you that it comes up. 1 Samuel 20:11 has a man name the field before he names the danger, and puts the hardest conversation in the book onto two pairs of feet, and it is the Holy Spirit and not my saying so who takes six months of a wrong conclusion off a father.

And this, which is the word I came with:

You have a different room available in about four minutes, and choosing it has never once been the same as avoiding anything. The written word moves them both outside before the subject arrives, and the Spirit of God is the one who is beside a man and a son walking and not saying anything yet.

Out. Twenty minutes. Nothing for ten.

Declare this over yourself

  1. Table where four sentences is as far as we ever get, you are not proof of anything about my son. 1 Samuel 20:11 says come, and let us go out into the field, and they went out both of them, so by the Holy Spirit I take him out for twenty minutes today in the name of Jesus.
  2. Conclusion that he does not trust me with it, you were never true and you were produced by a room. The written word moves the hardest conversation in that whole account outdoors before a word of it is said, and by the Holy Spirit I am done reading a chair as a verdict.
  3. Father, You had him name the field before he named the danger. Your word in 1 Samuel 20 puts the choosing of the ground ahead of the choosing of the words, so by Your Spirit I walk beside my son today and I say nothing for ten minutes.

Why we ask you to say these out loud
