There Is Only Me At This Door

Every article you have ever read about getting the family outside was written for a house with two adults in it.

Nobody says so. That is the thing. They do not say it, so you cannot argue with it, and you finish reading and feel worse without being able to point at the sentence that did it.

Somebody holds the door while somebody else does the shoes. Somebody stays with the youngest while somebody else runs back up for the thing that got left. Somebody carries and somebody steers.

In your hallway there is one adult, and that adult is doing all four of those jobs in sequence, which is why it takes eighteen minutes and why by the end of it you have nothing pleasant left in your voice.

So let me be clear about what I am not going to do here. I am not going to tell you that it is not that hard. It is exactly that hard. The arithmetic is real and you have been doing it correctly.

What I want to touch is the sentence underneath it, the one you would not say out loud, which is that a household with one adult in it is a lesser version of a household.

The hand that gets held

There is a promise in Isaiah that is very specific about which hand.

For I the LORD thy God will hold thy right hand, saying unto thee, Fear not; I will help thee. (Isaiah 41:13, King James Version)

The right hand. Not both. One.

I have read that verse most of my life and never once noticed the anatomy of it until somebody pointed it out to me. God does not take both hands. He takes one, and the other one stays free, and the other one is the one you work with.

That is not a small detail in a house where one adult carries everything.

You are not being asked to have a spare hand, and you were never expected to have both of yours available before help arrived. Isaiah 41:13 names one hand held and leaves the other one doing what it is doing, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes that read as company rather than as a lecture.

And notice the posture of it. He is not standing in the doorway telling you the order to do things in. He is beside you with a hand, which is the thing a second adult in a hallway actually provides and the thing nobody has been able to give you.

You have somebody in the hallway with you already, and it has never once been the arrangement of the room that made that true. The passage puts the Lord alongside with a hand rather than above with instructions, and the Spirit of God is the one who is present in a small entryway at four in the afternoon.

The word household is not a headcount

Here is the thing that has been quietly agreed to in this house, and I want to disagree with it out loud.

There is a picture in your head of a proper household. It has more than one adult in it. And every time your door goes badly, that picture is standing there being the standard.

But look at how Scripture actually counts a family. It counts a house as a house. Rahab's house. The house of Cornelius. The household of Lydia, who is a woman doing business and has a house that is a house.

Nowhere is a home graded by the number of grown people standing in it.

You are running a whole household and not a partial one, and it was never being scored against a version with more adults in it. The written word calls a house a house without counting who is in it, and the Holy Spirit is the one who takes an old picture down off a hallway wall.

Lower the number of jobs, not the standard

So the practical part, and it is arithmetic rather than encouragement.

Nobody becomes two people. What can move is the number of separate jobs the door requires.

You are permitted to make the door smaller rather than make yourself bigger, and you were never going to solve this by becoming a more capable person. The passage hands help to somebody who still has work in the other hand, and the Spirit of God is the one who is present in an eighteen minute hallway.

Shoes on before coats, in one place, so nobody moves twice. Whatever gets carried, put it by the door the night before while nothing is happening. And settle it before you open your mouth: twenty minutes and not an outing, because an outing needs a bag and twenty minutes needs a key.

One adult is a whole household, and a door that only one person can open is still a door that opens.

You are able to take jobs off the door instead of adding effort to yourself, and it has never once required a second adult to do that arithmetic. Isaiah 41:13 gives help alongside rather than a rearrangement of the household, and the Spirit of God is what makes a smaller list feel like provision rather than defeat.

And when the youngest sits down on the step and refuses to move, which will happen, you have not failed the system. You have met the part of it that no household of any size has ever solved.
