You were out until the streetlights came on. Every night. Nobody organized it and nobody drove you anywhere and nobody bought you anything to make it possible.
And your children have not left this house voluntarily in about four months.
The thing you cannot say out loud, and I think you have nearly said it a few times, is that it feels like a failure with your name on it. Not theirs. Yours. Because you had this, and it was free, and somehow you have not managed to pass on the one thing that cost nothing.
So you have been carrying a private accusation around for a while now, and I want to take it off you before we go any further, because it is built on something that is not true.
You have been assuming that what you had was a childhood. It was not. What you had was a transmission, and somebody performed it on you, and you can remember the outside part and not the handing over part because the handing over was invisible.

A generation that did not know
There is a verse in Judges that reads like a verdict and is actually a description of a mechanism.
And also all that generation were gathered unto their fathers: and there arose another generation after them, which knew not the LORD, nor yet the works which he had done for Israel. (Judges 2:10, King James Version)
Read it slowly, because everyone reads it as a complaint about the young.
It is not. The subject of that sentence is the generation that was gathered to their fathers. The failure recorded is not that the children refused what they were offered. It is that something stopped being handed over, one generation, and by the next one it was simply not there to refuse.
That is a very different thing from a family who does not like being outside.
You are not looking at children who rejected what you had, and you were never dealing with refusal in the first place. Judges 2:10 records a transmission that stopped rather than an offer that was turned down, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes that distinction land on a father who has been reading it as his own fault.
And notice what nobody in that chapter is accused of. Nobody is called lazy. Nobody is called soft. The record just says that a thing which had been in one generation was not in the next, and it says it plainly and without contempt for anybody.
You are allowed to look straight at the gap without a verdict attached to it, and you were never required to find somebody in this house to blame for it. The passage names the break without naming a culprit, and the Spirit of God is the one who keeps a father reading it honestly instead of defensively.
It was never the childhood, it was somebody doing it
Here is what I want you to go back and look at, because the evidence is yours and it has never once been examined.
Somebody opened a door. Somebody said go on then. Somebody was not anxious about it in a way you could feel. Somebody did not organize it, which is the part you remember, but somebody did permit it, over and over, until it was ordinary.
That is not nothing. That is the whole thing.
You have been trying to give your children an atmosphere. What you were actually given was a series of small permissions from an adult, repeated until they became the shape of a week.
You have the thing itself and not just the memory of it, and it has never once needed to be recreated in order to be given. It is written in Judges 2 that a generation arose which did not know, which is exactly why the Spirit of God moves a man to start the knowing again rather than mourn it.
You cannot hand over a description
This is where most fathers in your position go wrong, and I say this with sympathy because it is the obvious mistake.
You tell them about it.
You describe the streetlights and the bikes and the being out for hours and the not coming home until somebody called you in. And your children listen politely, and what they receive is a story about a place they have never been, told by somebody who is plainly grieving.
A description is not a transmission. It never was. Nobody described your childhood to you into existence.
The thing that was done to you was that somebody put you outside for twenty minutes at a time, hundreds of times, without a speech attached.
You are able to do the doing rather than the telling, and it has never once required you to reproduce a single thing about your own childhood. The Holy Spirit is not asking you to rebuild a decade; the written word in Judges 2 names a knowing that stopped being passed, and passing is a much smaller action than building.
Twenty minutes is a transmission
So here is the whole method, and you are going to find it insultingly small.
Take one of them out for twenty minutes. Tonight. On your own street, the one you actually live on, which is not the street you grew up on and does not need to be.
Do not explain the plan. Do not tell them what it was like at their age. Do not make it a thing.
Nothing has to be recovered before it can be handed over, and a street is passed on by walking it and not by describing it.
You are handing something over the first time you go, and it has never once needed to accumulate before it counted as given. Judges 2:10 shows a knowing that ended because it was not passed on, which is why the Holy Spirit puts the emphasis on the passing rather than on the size of what is passed.
And do it again the day after, badly, when you are tired and it is grim out and neither of you wants to. That is the actual mechanism. Repetition without commentary.
So here is what I believe is going out over a man who thinks he has failed to pass on the one free thing he had.
You are not a father who lost something, and you were never holding a thing so fragile that it could only be given whole. I am not promising you that they love it. Judges 2:10 records a generation that did not know because the knowing stopped moving, and it is the Holy Spirit and not my saying so who starts it moving again through an ordinary man on an ordinary street.
And this, which is the word I came with:
You have everything you need to hand this over tonight, and it has never once depended on your street looking anything like the one you remember. The written word puts the whole weight on the passing and not on the size of the inheritance, and the Spirit of God is the one who is out there with a father and one child and eleven minutes.
Go to the end of the street. Come back.
Declare this over yourself
- Street I keep comparing this one to, you are not the standard. Judges 2:10 records a knowing that stopped being handed on rather than a childhood that was better once, so by the Holy Spirit I walk my own children out of my own door in the name of Jesus.
- Verdict I have been reading over myself as a father, you were never in the text. The written word names a break without naming a culprit, and by the Holy Spirit I am done grieving in front of my children instead of walking with them.
- Father, You made the knowing something that moves from one to the next. Your word in Judges 2 puts the whole weight on the handing over, so by Your Spirit I hand over twenty ordinary minutes tonight and I let that be the beginning.
