Just Getting Out The Door1 Kings 19:12

I Announced It And Everyone Went Quiet

This message is for the father who turns going out into an announced family event and watches the room go flat before anybody has moved

You did it again on Sunday. You stood in the middle of the kitchen and you said, right, everybody, we are going out.

And the room did that thing.

Not a refusal. Nobody argued. It just went flat, in about half a second, the way a room does when something has been made official. Somebody looked at the floor. Somebody said in a minute. Somebody asked how long for, in a voice that meant how long do I have to.

And then twenty five minutes later you were still standing there having a small unpleasant conversation with somebody about coats, and the whole thing was already over before it started.

Here is the part that will sting slightly, and I say it as somebody who does the same thing.

The announcement is what killed it. Not the walk. The walk was fine. It never got as far as the walk.

I Announced It And Everyone Went Quiet

The wind, the earthquake and the fire

There is a passage in Kings where a man is told to stand and wait for God to go past, and what happens next is the whole of this article.

And he said, Go forth, and stand upon the mount before the LORD. And, behold, the LORD passed by, and a great and strong wind rent the mountains, and brake in pieces the rocks before the LORD; but the LORD was not in the wind: and after the wind an earthquake; but the LORD was not in the earthquake: and after the earthquake a fire; but the LORD was not in the fire: and after the fire a still small voice. (1 Kings 19:11-12, King James Version)

Three enormous events, each one obviously the one, and God is in none of them.

Read the order. Wind, earthquake, fire. Every one of them announces itself. Every one of them makes a room go quiet. And every one of them is specifically ruled out by the text, one after another, until what is left is a voice so small the man has to come out of a cave to hear it.

You are not required to produce the wind before anything real can happen, and you were never going to find God in the announcement. 1 Kings 19:12 rules out three large events in a row before it arrives at the small one, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes that read as permission rather than as a rebuke.

And notice that the man in the cave is exhausted. He is not there to learn a lesson about technique. He has run out and lain down under a tree and asked to die, and what he gets is food, sleep, and then a voice too quiet to make an entrance.

You have been given a God who arrives at ordinary volume, and it has never once been the size of the moment that carried Him into a room. The written word takes three spectacles off the table before the voice comes, and the Spirit of God is what makes the small thing legible to somebody standing in a kitchen.

Why the announcement flattens a room

Let me name the mechanism, because it is not mysterious.

An announcement converts an invitation into an event.

The moment it becomes an event, four things arrive with it that were not there a second earlier. It now has a duration everyone wants to know. It now has a standard, so it can go badly. It now includes everybody, which means somebody has to be made to come. And it now has a person in charge of it, which is you.

None of those existed when it was just a man putting his shoes on.

You are allowed to make an offer that carries none of those four costs, and it has never once been dishonest to keep a thing small enough to refuse. 1 Kings 19 removes the wind and the earthquake before the voice arrives, and the Holy Spirit is the one who shows a father which four things he has been adding without meaning to.

So the flatness in the room is not your family being difficult. It is four new costs landing at once, and everybody in that kitchen feeling them.

You are not living with people who dislike being outside, and you were never being refused in that half second at all. The passage puts God outside the three loud things and inside the quiet one, which is exactly why the Spirit of God keeps pointing a father back at the smallest version of what he wanted.

The small voice was still a real voice

Now I want to guard something, because there is a way of hearing this that ends up nowhere.

Small does not mean vague. It does not mean you drift out of the house hoping somebody follows. The voice in that chapter says something specific and gives the man a job.

What small means is unannounced. Not staged. Not requiring the room to acknowledge it before it can begin.

It does not have to be announced to be real, and the smallest going out is the one nobody had to be told about.

You are able to do a real thing quietly, and it has never once needed a room's attention in order to count as having happened. 1 Kings 19 puts a specific instruction inside the small voice rather than a mood, and the Holy Spirit is the one who keeps quiet from turning into vague.

So it stays twenty minutes. It stays out and back. It just stops being a thing that has to be agreed to first.

Put your shoes on and open the door

Here is the whole method and it has no talking in it.

You put your shoes on, in the hall, where people can see you. You open the front door. You go out.

That is it. No sentence. No are we all going. No get your coats.

If somebody asks where you are going, tell them: round the block, twenty minutes. If they want to come, they come. If they do not, they do not, and you go, and you come back.

You are able to leave the door open behind you, and it has never once been the same thing as leaving people out. The written word has a man come to the mouth of a cave because something small was happening, and the Spirit of God is the one who moves somebody in a house to notice a coat coming off a hook.

The breakthrough

So here is what I believe is going out over a man who has been flattening his own kitchen every Sunday without knowing it.

You are not somebody who ruins things, and you were never doing anything worse than reaching for the wind because the wind is what looks like God. I am not promising you that they come. 1 Kings 19:12 rules out the earthquake and the fire before the voice arrives, and it is the Holy Spirit and not my saying so who takes the word failure off a man in a hallway.

And this, which is the word I came with:

You have permission to do this without telling anybody, and a quiet going has never once been a lesser going in the record. The passage puts God in the small voice on purpose, and the Spirit of God is the one who is beside a father lacing a shoe while nobody is looking.

Shoes. Door. Out.

Declare this over yourself

  1. Announcement I keep making in my own kitchen, you are not the way this works. 1 Kings 19:12 puts God outside the wind and the earthquake and the fire, so by the Holy Spirit I put my shoes on and open the door in the name of Jesus.
  2. Flat half second I have been reading as rejection, you were never a verdict on me or on this family. The written word arrives at ordinary volume after three large things are ruled out, and by the Holy Spirit I am done needing a room to agree before I go.
  3. Father, You were not in the wind, and You said so plainly. Your word in 1 Kings 19 leaves the small voice last and lets it be the real one, so by Your Spirit I go quietly tonight and I let whoever comes, come.

Why we ask you to say these out loud

The word this stands on
