Everybody Waits For Me To Start It

Nothing in this house begins until you begin it.

Not out of disrespect. Nobody has ever refused you. It is simply that at some point over about fifteen years you became the person who says right, come on, and now the whole household waits for that sentence the way a room waits for a light switch.

So the going out gets decided by you, and the timing gets decided by you, and the finding of everybody gets done by you, and the reminding about coats gets done by you.

And by the time you are actually standing at the door with the key in your hand, you have already worked a shift.

Then somebody says they need two minutes, and you find that you are somehow annoyed about it, and you do not like being that man, and you also do not know how to stop.

I want to put something in front of you that is older than your household and is almost exactly this.

Too heavy for thee

There is a scene in Exodus where somebody watches a man work and then tells him the truth about it.

Thou wilt surely wear away, both thou, and this people that is with thee: for this thing is too heavy for thee; thou art not able to perform it thyself alone. (Exodus 18:18, King James Version)

This is Jethro, and he is not correcting a sin.

Read the sentence carefully, because everybody reads it as a rebuke and it is not one. It is a load assessment. Too heavy for thee. Not too heavy for a better man. Too heavy, full stop, for one person, and the person doing it happens to be Moses.

You are receiving a load assessment and not a character report, and you were never being told you should have managed it. Exodus 18:18 names the weight rather than the man carrying it, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes that read as relief instead of as failure.

And notice who wears away in that sentence. Both thou, and this people that is with thee. Two casualties, not one. The man doing everything, and the household waiting for him to do it.

You have been carrying something that costs the people around you as well, and it was never only your own tiredness at stake in that hallway. The written word puts the whole company inside the wearing away, and the Spirit of God is the one who lets a man see that without it becoming another thing he is guilty of.

How a man becomes a starter motor

Nobody decided this. That is the first thing to say.

It accumulated. Somebody had to say come on, once, fifteen years ago. Then again. Then it became reliable, and once a thing is reliable a household stops holding it, because a household never holds what somebody else is already holding.

There is no villain here. There is not a single ungrateful person in your family. There is one job that got assigned by repetition and never reviewed.

You are looking at an arrangement and not at an attitude, and you were never surrounded by people who decided to let you do it. Exodus 18 describes a system that grew without anybody choosing it, and the Holy Spirit is the one who keeps a man from turning an arrangement into a grievance.

And here is the part that matters for a doorway. A household that waits does not know it is waiting. Nobody in your hall is thinking: he will sort it out. They are simply not thinking about it at all, because for fifteen years there has been no reason to.

You are able to stop reading that as being taken for granted, and it has never once been contempt that put you at the front of every leaving. The passage explains the wearing away by the weight and not by the people, and the Spirit of God is what keeps a good man from getting bitter in his own hallway.

What Jethro did not say

Now watch the shape of the advice, because it is not what people quote.

Jethro does not say do less. He does not say care less. He does not tell Moses to withdraw or to teach anybody a lesson by stopping.

He says give the load to more hands, and keep for yourself only the part that is genuinely yours.

Being worn out at a doorway is a report about the load and not a report about the man.

You are able to hand a piece of this over without handing over the caring, and it has never once been the same thing as stepping back from your own family. Exodus 18:18 says too heavy for thee and then divides the work rather than abandoning it, and the Holy Spirit is the one who shows a man which part was actually his.

So the doorway version of that is very small. You stop doing the gathering.

Go without gathering anybody

Here is the method and it will feel wrong for about four days.

Put your shoes on. Say, at ordinary volume, once: I am going out for twenty minutes.

Then do not find anybody. Do not go upstairs. Do not check who heard. Do not remind anybody about a coat.

Open the door and go.

You are still the one who opens the door, and it has never once required you to carry every person through it as well. The written word keeps Moses in the work and takes the impossible part of it off him, and the Spirit of God is the one who is with a man walking out of his own house alone for the first time in years.

The first two times, nobody will come, because for fifteen years coming has meant being fetched. By about the fourth time somebody will be putting shoes on when you get to the door. That is the household learning to start itself, and it can only learn it if you stop doing it for them.
