The One Who Will Not ComeGenesis 37:4

The Other Two Are Watching Me

This message is for the mother spending her energy on the child who refuses, who has noticed the two who always say yes standing in the hall being no trouble

There are three of them and you have been thinking about one.

That is the honest shape of the last eight months. One of them will not come out, and everything you have read and thought and prayed about has been aimed at that door, and you have not noticed how much of the household's weather that has been setting.

But the other two have noticed.

They stand in the hall with their shoes on while you have the conversation upstairs. They wait. They do not complain, because they are the ones who do not complain, and then when you come down and say never mind, we will go another time, they go and take their shoes off again.

And they have been learning something for eight months, and it is not the thing you would want them to learn.

The Other Two Are Watching Me

When his brethren saw

There is a sentence in Genesis about a household with an imbalance in it, and what it records is what the others could see.

And when his brethren saw that their father loved him more than all his brethren, they hated him, and could not speak peaceably unto him. (Genesis 37:4, King James Version)

When his brethren saw.

The verse does not begin with a father doing something wrong. It begins with what was visible from the other side of the room. The brothers are not told anything. They watch, and they draw a conclusion, and the conclusion sets the direction of everything that follows.

You are being shown what a household sees rather than what a parent intends, and it was never the intention that anybody in that family was reading. Genesis 37:4 puts the whole account on what the brothers saw, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes that read as a warning about visibility rather than a charge of favoritism.

And I want to be careful, because your house is not that house. Nobody here loves one more. What is going out is not love, it is attention, and attention is the thing a child can actually count.

You have children who are counting something real, and it was never affection that they have been measuring. The written word records what was seen and lets that stand as the mechanism, and the Spirit of God is what shows a mother the difference between what she feels and what is countable from a hallway.

What the easy ones are learning

Now the practical heart of it, and it is about a lesson nobody meant to teach.

In this house, at the moment, saying no gets a conversation, a change of plan, and half an hour of somebody's whole attention. Saying yes gets a wait in a hallway and then a cancellation.

Nobody designed that. It is simply what the arrangement produces, and it has been running for eight months, and children are extremely good at learning how a system pays.

You are looking at a system and not at a preference, and it was never a choice about which child mattered. Genesis 37:4 puts the whole account on what a household could see, and the Spirit of God is the one who separates an arrangement from a mother's heart.

And the two who are easy are not going to say anything about it, because being easy is their position in this family and they hold it carefully. They will just go on standing in the hall with their shoes on, being no trouble, for as long as it takes.

The ones who say yes are not costing you nothing, and going out with them is not a consolation prize for anybody.

You are not neglecting anybody on purpose, and it was never a preference that produced eight months of this. Genesis 37 records the seeing rather than accusing the father of intending it, which is exactly why the Spirit of God addresses an arrangement rather than a heart.

And the fix is not to give the difficult one less. It is to stop the household's whole outing depending on his answer, which is a change in the machinery and not a change in anybody's affections.

Go with the two

So the practical part, and it is one sentence and one door.

Ask him once, briefly, and then go with whoever is standing in the hall, on time, without waiting.

You are able to leave on time regardless, and it has never once been abandonment to go out with the children who said yes. The passage puts everything on what a household sees, and the Holy Spirit is the one who is with a mother picking up her keys at the agreed hour.

And this is the part that matters most: do not mention the third one while you are out. Not once. Not a wish that he had come, not a remark about how he is doing, not a small sigh at a corner.

Because if you take the two out and talk about the one, they have not had twenty minutes with their mother. They have had twenty minutes of the same subject in a different location, and they will know it.

Give them the whole twenty. Talk about whatever they want. Come home, and let the no stand without any comment on it in either direction.

You are able to give two children an undivided twenty minutes, and it has never once required the third to be there for that to be whole. Genesis 37:4 shows what a household concludes from what it can see, and the Spirit of God is the one who is out on a street with a mother and two children who are being paid attention.

The breakthrough

So here is what I believe is going out over a woman whose whole year has been aimed at one door.

You are not a mother who has favorites, and you were never doing anything except pouring yourself at the child who seemed to need it most. I am not promising you that he comes. Genesis 37:4 puts the entire mechanism on what a household could see rather than on what a father intended, and it is the Holy Spirit and not my saying so who separates an arrangement from a heart.

And this, which is the word I came with:

You have two children with their shoes on tonight, and they have never once been the consolation for anything. The written word records the seeing and takes it seriously, and the Spirit of God is the one who is beside a woman leaving on time with whoever is in the hall.

Ask once. Then go at six.

Declare this over yourself

  1. Arrangement in this house where a no gets my whole attention, you are not what I meant to teach and I am taking you apart. Genesis 37:4 says when his brethren saw, and puts the whole mechanism on what a household watches, so by the Holy Spirit I go at six with whoever is in the hall in the name of Jesus.
  2. Fear that going without him is abandoning him, you were never true and you have cost two children eight months of hallways. The written word records the seeing and lets that stand as the thing that shaped everything, and by the Holy Spirit I am done making a whole household's outing depend on one answer.
  3. Father, You put that account on what the brothers could see and not on what the father felt. Your word in Genesis 37 takes visibility seriously without condemning anybody's love, so by Your Spirit I give two children an undivided twenty minutes today.

Why we ask you to say these out loud
