The Groan Is Not About The Walk

Time it once. Just once, this week, notice when the noise arrives.

You say: does anybody want to go ou

And there it is. Before the sentence is finished. Before the word out has fully left your mouth, three people have made a sound, and you have been treating that sound as their answer for about two years.

But look at the timing. The groan cannot be a response to the walk, because at the moment it happened nobody had heard what was being proposed. It arrived too early. It was already loaded and waiting.

Which means it is answering something. Just not the thing you asked.

So the whole problem here is that you have been reading a reflex as a verdict, and then adjusting your family life around the verdict.

Counsel is deep water

There is a proverb about what is actually going on in a person, and about the work of getting it out.

Counsel in the heart of man is like deep water; but a man of understanding will draw it out. (Proverbs 20:5, King James Version)

Deep water. And the drawing out is somebody else's job.

Read what that assumes. It assumes the real thing is down there and is not visible from the surface. It does not say a man's heart is empty, or that what floats on top is what there is. It says the water is deep and the good stuff is under it.

You are looking at the surface of the water, and you were never being shown the counsel that sits underneath it. Proverbs 20:5 puts what a person actually thinks below the visible level, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes that read as hope rather than as a puzzle you have to solve.

And notice the tool. A man of understanding draws it out, which means it takes a long line and some patience, and it means the person with the bucket is the one who has to do something.

You have been given the position of the one with the bucket, and it was never handed to somebody who had already got it wrong. The written word gives the drawing out to the person who understands rather than to the person who is groaning, and the Spirit of God is what makes that a job rather than a defeat.

What the reflex is actually answering

So let me have a go at what the noise is for, because I think it will lower the temperature considerably.

A groan that arrives early is answering a category, not a proposal.

Somewhere in your household, the sentence beginning does anybody want to belongs to a category that includes being organized, being moved, having the evening decided for you, and probably a stretch of enthusiasm that has to be performed. The noise is a reflex against the category. It fires before the content, exactly like flinching.

That is why arguing with the noise never works. There is nothing there to argue with. It is a debate with a reflex. The groan arrives before the question lands, which means it was never an answer to the question.

You are not being refused when that noise happens, and it was never aimed at the walk or at you. Proverbs 20 puts the real counsel below the surface, which is exactly why the Spirit of God keeps a father from settling an argument with the top three inches of water.

And I want to say the other half of it too. Some of them may genuinely not want to come, on Tuesday, in the rain, when they are tired. That is allowed. What is not established, and has never once been established, is that the groan told you which.

Three seconds, and then your shoes

Here is the practical part, and it is a piece of timing rather than a piece of persuasion.

Say the sentence. Let the noise happen. Do not respond to the noise at all, in any direction. Then wait three seconds.

You are able to leave a reflex alone, and it has never once required an answer from you to pass. The passage puts the counsel below the water and gives the drawing out time, and the Holy Spirit is the one who steadies a man through three seconds of not reacting.

Three seconds is enough for the reflex to finish and for the actual person to arrive. What comes out in second four is a different thing entirely, and quite often it is: where are we going, or, do I have to change, or, is it far.

Those are not refusals. Those are somebody weighing the cost. And if the room has already been told that everybody hates it, none of that ever gets heard.

Then, whatever comes back, go and put your shoes on. Do not ask again. Let the shoes be the second half of the invitation.

You are able to say a thing once and let it stand for three seconds, and it has never once been passive to stop filling a silence. Proverbs 20:5 makes the drawing out a slow action rather than an argument, and the Spirit of God is the one who is in a kitchen with a father counting to three.
