The One Who Will Not ComeEphesians 6:4

I Made It A Condition And Lost Him

This message is for the father who attached going out to something his son wanted, got him through the door once, and has not been able to ask cleanly since

It worked once. That is the trouble with it.

He wanted something. You said: come out with me first. And he did, and you had twenty five minutes together, and on the way home you thought, well, that is one way to do it.

And ever since then you have not been able to ask him anything cleanly, and neither of you has said why.

Because the second time you asked without a condition attached, he waited. There was a pause, a small one, and in it he was weighing what this was going to cost, and you saw him do it and you have not been able to stop seeing it since.

So the price you attached once has attached itself to everything, and you did not put it there on purpose, and you cannot take it off by explaining.

I Made It A Condition And Lost Him

Provoke not your children to wrath

There is a line in Ephesians to fathers, and the thing it warns against is worth reading slowly.

And, ye fathers, provoke not your children to wrath: but bring them up in the nurture and admonition of the Lord. (Ephesians 6:4, King James Version)

Provoke not your children to wrath.

That word is not about temper. It means to exasperate, to stir up something by a pattern rather than by an incident, and the pattern in view is a father's ordinary way of doing things over years.

You are being warned about a pattern and not accused of an incident, and it was never one bad evening that this verse is about. Ephesians 6:4 addresses the standing manner of a father rather than a moment of it, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes that read as a correction of a method rather than a charge against a man.

And notice what is set against it. Nurture and admonition. Both of those are things given rather than exchanged. Neither one is priced.

You have been shown a way of raising a child that has nothing traded in it, and it was never a transaction that a household was supposed to run on. The written word puts the giving and the warning in one sentence, and the Spirit of God is what shows a man the difference between offering and dealing.

What a price does to an offer

Now the mechanism, and it is simple and it is not about your son's character.

Once an invitation has had a price attached, every later invitation is checked for one.

That is not suspicion. It is learning, and it is what any reasonable person does. He is not looking for a catch because he thinks badly of you. He is looking for a catch because there was one, once, and it worked, and now the category of your invitations has a price in it somewhere.

So the pause is not coldness. It is arithmetic. An invitation with a price on it is a transaction, and taking the price off is not a punishment for anybody.

You are not being distrusted, and it was never contempt that put a pause in front of an answer. Ephesians 6 names a pattern that exasperates rather than a person who is difficult, which is exactly why the Spirit of God works on a father's method and not on a boy's attitude.

And here is why explaining does not fix it. Saying I am not asking for anything is itself a sentence about the terms, which keeps terms in the room. The only thing that removes a price is a long run of offers that plainly do not have one.

Say it once and then never again

So the practical part, and it has an order to it.

First, once, say plainly: I should not have made that a condition. I am not doing that again.

You are able to name it once without it becoming a theme, and it has never once weakened a father to say plainly that he got something wrong. The passage aims the correction at a father's own pattern, and the Holy Spirit is the one who is with a man saying two sentences and then stopping.

Then never mention it again. Not as a reassurance, not as a preface, not as a joke. Every subsequent mention puts the terms back on the table.

Then ask, plainly, with nothing attached and nothing available. I am going out for twenty minutes at six, come if you want. No offer behind it. Nothing that could be being angled at.

And let the no stand. Every time, for a long time, because the only evidence that removes a price is a series of offers that never turn out to have had one in them.

You are able to be evidence rather than an argument, and it has never once been possible to talk a price off an invitation. Ephesians 6:4 sets the nurture against the provoking without a word of persuasion anywhere in it, and the Spirit of God is the one who is present when a father asks for the tenth time with nothing behind it.

The breakthrough

So here is what I believe is going out over a man who found a way that worked and is paying for it.

You are not a manipulative father, and you were never doing anything worse than reaching for a thing that had once got you twenty five minutes with your own son. I am not promising you that he comes. Ephesians 6:4 warns fathers about the standing pattern of a house rather than about a bad evening, and it is the Holy Spirit and not my saying so who separates a method from a man.

And this, which is the word I came with:

You have permission to ask ten times with nothing behind it, and that has never once been the same thing as being ignored ten times. The written word puts nurture and admonition in place of anything traded, and the Spirit of God is the one who is with a father asking cleanly into a silence.

Say it once. Then just ask.

Declare this over yourself

  1. Condition I attached to a walk once, you are not staying on my invitations and I am taking you off. Ephesians 6:4 says ye fathers, provoke not your children to wrath, so by the Holy Spirit I ask once with nothing behind it in the name of Jesus.
  2. Pause I keep seeing before he answers me, you were never contempt and you were never distrust. The written word warns about a father's standing pattern and never about a son's character, and by the Holy Spirit I am done reading arithmetic as coldness.
  3. Father, You set nurture and admonition against provoking and put nothing traded in either. Your word in Ephesians 6 corrects a method without condemning the man, so by Your Spirit I ask cleanly today and I let the answer stand.

Why we ask you to say these out loud

The word this stands on
