I Keep Asking And It Has Become Pressure

You did everything right and it has gone wrong, and I want to say the first half of that sentence properly before the second.

You did not give up. When she stopped coming out, you kept asking. When the answers got shorter, you kept asking. You were told, correctly, that the worst thing is to stop offering, and you have not stopped offering for two years.

That is faithfulness and it should be said out loud, because nobody has said it to you.

And here is what has happened alongside it. Because the offer arrives every few days, it has stopped being an offer and become a thing she has to handle. She has to produce a no, again, and manage your face while she does it, and carry the small weight of having disappointed you into whatever she was doing before you knocked.

None of that was in your mind when you asked. All of it is in the room.

With cords of a man

There is a line in Hosea about how God draws people, and the material is the interesting part.

I drew them with cords of a man, with bands of love: and I was to them as they that take off the yoke on their jaws, and I laid meat unto them. (Hosea 11:4, King James Version)

Cords of a man means human cords, the kind a person could bear. And notice what is put beside it: taking a yoke off, and laying food down.

Both of those are removals or offerings. Neither is a pull.

You are being shown a drawing that takes weight off rather than adding it, and it was never persistence alone that moved anybody in that passage. Hosea 11:4 pairs the cords with a yoke coming off, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes that read as instruction rather than as a rebuke of a mother who kept trying.

And look at the last phrase. I laid meat unto them. Laid it down. Put it there. Not: brought it and stood over them while they ate.

You have a picture of something set down and left, and it was never required that anybody watch to see whether it was taken. The written word puts the food on the ground and lets the eating be theirs, and the Spirit of God is what shows a woman the difference between leaving an offer and delivering one.

What has happened to the asking

Now let me name what has changed, because nothing about the asking changed and it has changed anyway.

An offer that arrives once is a gift. An offer that arrives every three days is an outstanding item.

By about the fifteenth time, she is no longer being invited. She is being asked to resolve something, and there is only one way for her to resolve it that does not cost her more than she has, which is a quick no and a closed door.

You are watching somebody handle a task rather than turn down a mother, and it was never coldness that shortened those answers. Hosea 11:4 pairs the drawing with a yoke lifted off a jaw, and the Holy Spirit is the one who shows a woman what fifteen requests actually weigh.

And the noes have got shorter and colder, and that has been read as her getting further away, and it is at least as likely to be the sound of somebody managing a repeated task.

An invitation stops being one when it has to be answered, and lowering the weight is not the same as giving up on anybody.

You are not losing her, and it was never distance that made those answers get shorter. Hosea 11 describes a drawing that lifts a yoke rather than tightening a cord, which is exactly why the Spirit of God moves a mother toward lightening rather than toward stopping.

And I want to be plain about what I am not saying. I am not saying stop asking. That advice is everywhere and it is wrong, and it is how a household ends up with silence. What has to change is not whether but how often and with what weight attached.

Ask once, then leave it lying there

So the practical part, and it has two halves.

The first: ask once this week. Once. Not four times, not every time you pass the door.

You are able to ask once and mean it entirely, and it has never once been abandonment to space something out. The passage lays the food down rather than presenting it repeatedly, and the Holy Spirit is the one who is with a woman walking past a door without knocking.

The second half is the one that does the work. Say it in a form that does not require an answer.

Not: do you want to come. That is a question and a question demands a reply. Instead: I am going out at six on Thursday, the offer is open, you do not have to say anything.

And then mean the last part. Do not look at her afterward. Do not raise it again on Wednesday. Let the no stand without being spoken, and let her have the whole of Thursday to change her mind in without anybody watching.

You are able to keep the invitation open without making it a question, and those two have never once been the same thing. Hosea 11:4 draws with cords a person can bear and takes the yoke off the jaw, and the Spirit of God is the one who is present when a mother says a thing once and lets it lie.
