Everybody Groans So I Stopped Suggesting It

You cannot remember the last time you said it.

Not because it was traumatic. Because it stopped, the way things stop, without a decision. There was a groan, and then another groan, and then one evening you thought about saying it and did not, and that was about a year ago now.

And what has grown in the space since is much worse than the groaning was.

There is now a subject in your house that does not get raised. And a subject that does not get raised is very hard to raise, because bringing it up after a year is not a small remark anymore, it is an event, and everybody in the room would hear it as one.

So the price of asking has gone up every month you have not asked, and you can feel exactly how expensive it has become, which is why you are still not asking.

I want to bring the price back down. That is the whole job of this article.

I stand at the door and knock

There is a verse in Revelation that is almost always used for something else, and its plainest reading is about a door somebody is on the wrong side of.

Behold, I stand at the door, and knock: if any man hear my voice, and open the door, I will come in to him, and will sup with him, and he with me. (Revelation 3:20, King James Version)

I stand at the door, and knock.

Read who is doing the knocking, and where He is. He is outside. This is a letter to a church, which means these are His own people, and the door is closed, and the response to that is not a speech about the door.

It is a knock. A small repeated noise that costs nothing and can be ignored without any embarrassment on either side.

You are being shown the smallest possible move, and it was never a speech that anybody in that verse is waiting to hear. Revelation 3:20 answers a closed door with a knock rather than with an explanation, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes that read as a way back in rather than as a rebuke.

And notice what is not there. No mention of how long the door has been shut. No accounting for it. No requirement that anybody explain what happened before the knocking starts.

You have a way back into this that skips the whole history, and it was never required that you account for the year first. The written word starts the knocking without any reference to how the door came to be closed, and the Spirit of God is what removes a twelve month explanation from a mother's throat.

Why it got expensive

Now let me name the mechanism, because it is the thing that has actually trapped you, and it is not about your family at all.

A subject that has not been raised in a year is loaded. Everybody in the room knows it has not been raised, even if nobody has thought about it once.

So the thing being imagined is not a small question. It is a small question with a year attached to the back of it, and everybody turning round, and a silence, and somebody hunting for something to say.

That is a genuinely awful thing to picture, and no wonder it has not been done. But here is the thing. The year is attached to it in your head. It is not attached to it in theirs. The groan was never a verdict, and a door that has been shut for a year can still be knocked on from your side.

You are carrying the weight of that year on your own, and it was never in the room with anybody else. Revelation 3 knocks without a word about the closing of the door, which is exactly why the Spirit of God does not require a mother to make an announcement about her own silence.

Knock small

So the practical part, and every part of it is about keeping it small.

Do not explain. Do not say I know I stopped asking. Do not say I have been thinking about how we never do anything. Every one of those turns a knock into an event, which is exactly the thing that has been stopping you.

You are able to leave the year out of it entirely, and it has never once been dishonest to raise a thing plainly rather than explain it first. The passage knocks without a preamble of any kind, and the Holy Spirit is the one who keeps a small move from swelling into a speech.

Say it exactly the way you would have said it two years ago, before any of this. One sentence, ordinary voice, no weight: I am going out for twenty minutes, anyone who wants to come, come.

Then go. That is the second half of keeping it small, and it matters more than the sentence. If you ask and then hover, the question grows. If you ask and go, it stays the size it was.

And expect the groan. It will probably come, because a reflex does not know that anything has changed. Let it happen and go anyway.

You are able to survive the noise this time, and it has never once been an answer to anything you asked. Revelation 3:20 has somebody keep knocking at a door that is not opening yet, and the Spirit of God is the one who is with a woman saying one ordinary sentence into a room that has not heard it for a year.
