I Thought Resting Was Failing

You would never say it. That is the thing about this one.

If somebody asked you whether rest matters you would say yes, and you would mean it, and you could probably make a decent case for it from Scripture without preparing.

And you have not stopped for more than about eleven minutes in fifteen years.

So there is what you believe when asked, and there is what you believe at the level you actually operate from, and those two have been quietly disagreeing for a long time, and the second one has been winning every single day.

Here is a test for the second one. Imagine sitting down for half an hour on a Saturday with nothing being achieved. Notice the first word that arrives.

For most men in your position it is a word about character.

There remaineth therefore a rest

There is a sentence in Hebrews that treats rest as a place rather than as a recovery.

There remaineth therefore a rest to the people of God. For he that is entered into his rest, he also hath ceased from his own works, as God did from his. (Hebrews 4:9-10, King James Version)

There remaineth therefore a rest to the people of God.

Remaineth. It is still there. It was not used up, it did not expire, and it is described as a thing that is kept in reserve for people rather than granted to them when they have finished.

You have a rest that has been left standing for you, and it was never a reward that had to be reached. Hebrews 4:9 makes the rest something that remains rather than something earned, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes that read as an inheritance rather than as a permission slip.

And then the comparison, which is the part that should undo the second belief. He also hath ceased from his own works, as God did from his.

As God did. The stopping is described by reference to God stopping, which means resting is not the absence of God's character, it is a description of it.

You are being invited into something God Himself did, and it was never idleness that anybody entered. The written word puts the ceasing alongside God's own ceasing, and the Spirit of God is what takes the word laziness off an act that Scripture attributes to God.

Where the second belief came from

Now let me guess at the source, and if I am wrong the question still works.

Somebody taught you this. Not with a sentence. With a life.

There was a man, probably, who did not stop, and who was admired for it, and whose worth was visibly attached to his output, and you learned the whole thing from watching rather than from anything anybody said.

And a thing learned that way does not get examined, because it never arrived as a claim. It arrived as the shape of the world. There is a rest that remains, and it was left standing on purpose, and staying in is not a smaller answer than going out.

You are not lazy, and it was never a moral fault that got installed in a boy watching a man work. Hebrews 4 puts the ceasing beside God's own ceasing, which is exactly why the Spirit of God addresses a belief rather than a character.

And here is the test I promised at the top. Would you say it out loud to one of your own children? Would you tell your son that stopping is failing?

You would not. You would be careful to say the opposite, and you would mean that too, and the fact that you would protect him from a thing you apply to yourself is the whole evidence that it is not true.

Ten minutes, achieving nothing

So the practical part, and it is designed to be useless on purpose.

Sit outside your own front door for ten minutes and do not turn it into anything.

You are able to do a thing that produces nothing, and it has never once been a waste of ten minutes to have ceased from something. The passage puts the entering into rest alongside God ceasing from His works, and the Holy Spirit is the one who is with a man sitting on a step producing nothing.

Not thinking about work. Not planning. Not praying with a list, which is a real thing and is not this. Not making a call while you are out there.

Ten minutes on a step, achieving nothing, which will feel like the least defensible thing done in this house all year. And the reason it has to be outside is that indoors, everything that could be done is in the room with you. On a step, nothing is.

And if a child comes out and sits down, let that be what it is and do not turn it into a conversation you have been meaning to have.

You are entering something rather than skipping something, and it has never once been the same as letting anything slide. Hebrews 4:9 says there remaineth a rest, which is a thing kept rather than a thing allowed, and the Spirit of God is the one who is present with a man doing nothing for ten minutes.
